Going to the dogs

Have you heard the joke about space aliens who landed on earth and wondered who was in charge? They saw humans holding leashes following their dogs around, and even scooping up after them. So they naturally assumed dogs were running the planet.

This is the year to find out what it might be like if dogs really were in charge. In the Chinese lunar calendar, each year takes on the characteristics of one of 12 animals in the zodiac, the constellations in the stars of the night sky. 2006 is the Year of the Dog, so according to Chinese tradition, this should be a doggone good year.

As dog lovers know, these friendly animals are often devoted companions, honest, loyal to their loved ones, and fiercely protective of their homes and families. If everyone behaves like dogs in 2006, what a wonderful year it will be! To celebrate the Lunar New Year, Canada Post has issued a single domestic rate (51¢) stamp and a souvenir sheet with a special commemorative ($1.49) stamp, both honouring 2006 as the Year of the Dog.
