A pioneering seat of learning

Universities have been around for thousands of years. In fact, the first university is thought to have been the University of Constantinople, which was founded in the year 425 and officially recognized as a university in 849. But just because they’ve been around for a while, doesn’t mean that universities are boring places. The University of Saskatchewan, for example, is a research and development leader in groundbreaking areas such as micro- and nano-device fabrication. This rapidly expanding field involves working on a scale that can be 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair using some of the most sophisticated technology in the world.

The university was also a pioneering place when it was first established in 1907, as it ushered in a new era of post-secondary education on the Canadian Prairies. Today, the university offers 58 degrees, diplomas and certificates, and is considered to be one of this country’s leading medical/doctoral institutions.

To celebrate the university’s 100th birthday, Canada Post issued a single domestic rate (52¢) stamp that features the school’s distinctive architecture and signature green and gold colours.
