The art of design
Graphic design is the art of arranging text and visual elements to communicate a message, feeling, opinion, thought or idea. The Nike Swoosh and McDonald’s Golden Arches are two examples of memorable graphic design.
It all started a long time ago in the ancient east with the printing of the first-ever books. Over the centuries, the traditions and skills of printmakers grew and changed. Today, designers work on computers instead of carving letters or symbols out of wood. They use software tools, the finest tipped pens and brushes, and get together in groups to share ideas and talk about the newest trends in their industry. One of those groups is the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada.
August 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of this Society. A simple, very thoughtful design decorates a domestic rate (51¢) stamp that celebrates this achievement.
When you first look at the stamp, you’ll see simple lines and an obvious “g.” But look closer and you’ll notice the “g” forms the shape of a beaver. You may even notice how the background grid seems to make the beaver symbol appear as though it’s lifting off the page. That’s what graphic design is all about. |
