If you build it, they will come!

When you enter a wonderful museum, soaring cathedral or awe-inspiring art gallery, do you ever stop to think about the person who designed it? People who design buildings are called architects, and they plan, design and oversee construction of all types of buildings from town homes to tower blocks. Some of these buildings are so spectacular that they’re works of art.

Some of Canada’s architectural works of art are represented beautifully on a set of domestic rate (52¢) stamps that was issued to commemorate the centenary of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). The stamps feature four of Canada’s architectural gems—the University of Lethbridge, St. Mary’s Church, the Ontario Science Centre, and the National Gallery of Canada—and the world-renowned architects who designed them. Those architects are Arthur Erickson, Douglas Cardinal, Raymond Moriyama and Moshe Safdie, who’ve all received the RAIC’s prestigious gold medal as well as been appointed to the Order of Canada.

Founded in 1907, the RAIC has a mandate to recognize and promote excellence in Canadian architecture and support the profession nationwide.
