Queen Elizabeth turns 80!
In the album pages that accompanied the last issue of Perf and Friends, we told a magical story of a little princess who grew up to become a wonderful queen. In this, the latest part of the story, we celebrate this beloved monarch’s 80th birthday!
Queen Elizabeth II, Canada’s head of state and one of Britain’s longest reigning monarchs, was born in London on April 21, 1926. Her coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953—when she was only
25 years old.
Princess Elizabeth’s first trip to Canada was in 1951. Since that time, Her Majesty has journeyed to our country more than any other Canadian monarch, and has visited every province and region of the country. The Queen has participated in thousands of ceremonial events in Canada—from large events in big cities attended by thousands, to smaller celebrations in communities and rural parts of the country.
In recognition of Queen Elizabeth’s actual birth date on April 21, Canada Post issued
a souvenir sheet of two international rate stamps ($1.49). The photo on the stamp
was taken at the RCMP Rockcliffe Stables, in Ottawa—a fitting location for a monarch who has such a keen and highly knowledgeable interest in horses. |
