Powerful peonies

Long ago, the ancient Greeks told a mythical story about Paeon, a man who knew the healing power of plants. Paeon often cured the injuries of the gods, including Hades, god of the underworld. Hades was grateful, so when Paeon died, he changed him into the plant that still bears his name.

Peonies bloom spectacularly each spring. You’ll recognize them in the garden by their strong, sweet smell and their enormous flowers, which are like oversized roses. Today, peonies are grown for their beauty but, for thousands of years, many people believed peonies had powerful healing properties. The ancient Greeks learned about the plant from the Chinese, who used various parts of it as medicine.

One thing is certain—peonies have the power to put a smile on almost anyone’s face. You can test this theory yourself in May or June, when peonies are in full bloom. Ask permission to cut a few of these big, bold blossoms and bring them in to your teacher at school. The results will amaze you!

Peonies are grown in many parts of Canada, and they are well loved by gardeners—and teachers—everywhere. Just in time for blooming season, Canada Post issued two domestic rate (52¢) stamps featuring two varieties of hybrid peonies grown in Canada, the 'Elgin' and the 'Coral ’n Gold'.
