A special museum

If you think museums can’t be exciting, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the country’s largest and most popular museum is sure to change your mind! At 150 years young, this very special place makes history and learning fun.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization, which is located on the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Quebec, welcomes 1.4 million visitors from across the country and around the globe each year. In addition to holding three million artifacts, the Museum has an IMAX® Theatre, the Canadian Children’s Museum and the Canadian Postal Museum—a permanent exhibit where you can see every Canadian stamp that has ever been issued. The Museum is also home to the world’s largest and finest collection of totem poles.

Did you know that the Canadian Museum of Civilization started as a geology museum in 1856—more than a decade before Canada was even a country? Since that time, the Museum has continued to grow, providing visitors with great stories about Canadian history and culture.

To recognize the Museum’s amazing 150-year heritage, Canada Post has issued a commemorative U.S. rate (89¢) stamp. You’ll be able to see this stamp as well as every other Canadian stamp next time you go to the Canadian Postal Museum!
