Hooray for hockey
He shoots… he scores! Even if you’re not a huge fan or a player yourself, chances are you’ve heard these words more than a few times. They go hand in hand with the skating, stick handling and shooting sport known all over the world as Canada’s game—hockey!
In spring 2008, the very best international hockey teams journeyed to Canada to compete for the Men’s World Championship, the premier annual event of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). This event was special for a couple of reasons: it was the first time in IIHF history that the World Championship was hosted by Canada, and it also marked the event’s 100th anniversary.
To celebrate IIHF’s centennial and the 2008 World Championship (May 2 to 18 in Halifax and Québec City), Canada Post issued a domestic rate (52¢) stamp that captures the energy and excitement of the game in all its fast-paced glory. And, at the heart of it all is Team Canada’s signature red jersey with its maple-leaf logo—the unmistakable uniform of champions.
