Floating-on-air mail

If a bright bunch of balloons appears at someone’s front door, everyone knows what it means—it’s time for a party! Balloons are symbols of celebration. They often appear when family and friends gather to celebrate special occasions, especially at birthday parties, where they add a festive sense of fun.

Cake and candles are the high point of most birthday celebrations, but have you ever wondered why? Lighting birthday candles is an old tradition that began as a way of sending good wishes up into the air on their smoke. Balloons are no doubt part of this tradition, since they bob lightly on the air, like the good wishes in the birthday song.

Whether you bop them or pop them, let them escape or shape them into animals, balloons are great fun for kids of all ages. People have often sent balloons on long-distance journeys, releasing them into the sky with a message for far-away places. Now, you can drop a balloon message right into the mailbox, thanks to a great new domestic rate (51¢) stamp from Canada Post.
