The results are in... the 2007 Canada Post Community Literacy Awards recognize 65 individuals and educators

July 25, 2007

"I've made it to the finalists list!" This must be one of many thoughts racing through Victoria Day's mind as the finalists are announced for the 2007 Canada Post Community Literacy Awards. The Swan River (MB) resident's desire to improve her literacy skills and self esteem, in order to provide a better life for her daughter, is just one of the compelling stories of commitment and determination told by this year's literacy award nominees.

"Even though our judges narrowed the 126 submissions down to 65 finalists, each triumphant story told by these inspirational learners and dedicated educators is that of a winner," said Robert Waite, Canada Post's senior vice-president of Stakeholder Relations and Brand. "The determination and drive shown by the finalists will make the final judging very difficult," Waite added.

Canada Post employee volunteers judged the 126 nominations, having been entrusted with the very difficult task of picking finalists in Individual Achievement and Educator categories. Literacy advocates from organizations working to better the literacy portrait in Canada, will determine the winners. Canada Post Community Literacy Award winners will be announced in September and will be recognized at ceremonies in their communities this fall. Prizes of $300 (Individual) and $500 (Educator) will be awarded.
