The wizards of delivery... Canada Post delivers final Harry Potter book

July 19, 2007

Pottermania is back and Canada Post is ready to deliver. July 21 will be a busy day for Canada Post as it delivers the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, to the thousands of children across the country who pre-ordered it online. Canada Post will begin delivering some 80,000 copies of the book at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

Both chapters.indigo.ca and amazon.ca have teamed up with Canada Post to deliver all of of their online book orders (more than 100,000 copies), with Canada Post making special arrangements for Saturday delivery of release-date orders. Canada Post Xpresspost service will ensure the Saturday, July 21 delivery of pre-ordered books in 36 cities across the country.

"Canada Post is proud to work with amazon.ca and chapters.indigo.ca to make sure Canadian Muggles from coast-to-coast-to-coast get Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in their hands the first day it's available," said Louis O'Brien, president of the Parcels Division at Canada Post. "We salute our dedicated employees who are working on a Saturday to make this all happen."

This isn't the first time Canada Post has been called on to make magic happen for Harry Potter fans:
  • Canada Post also handled amazon.ca's and chapters.indigo.ca's customized Saturday delivery for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 2005. At that time, more than 500 Canada Post employees met a 99.9% on-time service commitment while delivering more than 80,000 books in total - 50,000 on release day.
  • In 2003, Canada Post delivered 70,000 copies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on its release day. More than 600 Canada Post employees across Canada worked to deliver the book to customers in 21 major urban centres.
  • In 2000, Canada Post worked with Chapters Online Inc (now Chapters Indigo) to deliver close to 10,000 copies of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on the book's release date.

Canada Post has been working closely with chapters.indigo.ca and amazon.ca, to meet their delivery needs, a task made easier by Canada Post's wide range of services and unmatched delivery network. As Canadian businesses demand more options - such as customized delivery plans - Canada Post is meeting the challenge. "Business needs Canada Post to be flexible and adaptable and this special delivery is a perfect example of how Canada Post the modern post is developing a business model that our business partners can depend on," Louis O'Brien noted.
