Newsroom - Letters to the Editor

April 29, 2003

(Letter sent to Manotick Messenger)

Dear Editor:

I would like to respond to your March 26th editorial, "Postal codes latest slap at our communities."

Canada Post is not "urging" anyone to move quickly to transform rural postal codes into a larger city one. It is our mandate to deliver mail to existing addresses and the only time those addresses change is at the request of the municipality.

Requests for address changes could be due to amalgamation, as is the case in Ottawa, or as a result of civic addressing in rural areas to implement 911 emergency service. Whatever the case, Canada Post does not change addresses, that decision is left to municipalities.

If you are concerned with the proposed mailing address changes by the City of Ottawa you should take it up with them.

Sincerely,

John Caines
Manager, National Media Relations
