Postal Security

Security and Investigation Services

The Security and Investigations' group is Canada Post's principal security advisor to both employees and customers in protecting the mail, information, personnel and assets of Canada Post.

Mandate

The Canada Post Act empowers the Security and Investigation Services as an official federal investigative body and Postal Inspectors with the following mandate: "Provide for the security of the officers and employees of the Corporation, the property of the Corporation, and anything in the course of post." Canada Post Act (R.S.C. 1981). Section 18 ("Postal Inspectors")

Postal Inspectors help to protect the value of the Canada Post brand to customers by advising product and process owners on security requirements, investigating reported incidents of mail theft, damage to Canada Post property, fraud, threats to employees, corporate policy violations, mail related criminal offences, information and identity theft among other concerns.

Postal Inspectors are located across Canada to support these security programs and work closely with all employees to support Canada Post business lines

History

Postal Inspectors were the first investigative body established in Canada. In 1772, the position of surveyor, or inspector, was first established. The inspector's principal duty was to inspect and protect the mail while enroute. By 1835, there were two inspectors: one in Montréal and one in Toronto. They were assigned to investigate robberies that took place along the route between these two cities.

Professional Affiliations & Associations: The Security and Investigation Services' Postal Inspectors are active in such groups as IInformation Systems Security Association (ISSA), IInformation Systems and Audit Control Association (ISACA), Information Security Forum (ISF), American Society for industrial Security (ASIS), Canadian Society for Industrial Security (CSIS), Fraud Prevention Forum, Federal Association of Security Officials (FASO), International Security Management & Crime Prevention Institute, and Universal Postal Union (UPU) Postal Security Action Group and Information Security Working Group.

To report any mail at risk or damage or vandalism to Canada Post property or equipment, please call us toll-free at 1-800-267-1177 during business hours,
8:00 -18:00 local time. After hours, please contact your local police. Note: Do not use the 911 emergency line.
